Retail Pioneers: Kate Spade Empowers Women, On Purpose

May 29, 2017

The Kate Spade namesake was always a household name while I was growing up. From the posh and pretty satchels to the funky and flirty trend styles, I’ve simply always been a fan. Now as an adult, I celebrate this brand because Kate Spade (Founder Kate Brosnahan) is from my hometown of Kansas City, MO, but also because the brand is dedicated to empowering women, specifically female artisans in Masoro, Rwanda. This region was chosen because it is an underserved, East African country that has a rich history of artisan hand-crafted work such as carving, basket weaving, and embroidery.

For a couple years now, Kate Spade has launched its On Purpose Collection which is the global (and socially conscious) arm of the company. The line consists of trendy leather totes, wristlets, wallets, passport covers and other small accessories. The prices range from $78-378 USD and up. The current On Purpose Collection is really fun and colorful, reminiscent of summer in the desert and offers a bold pop of color for any poolside outfit. Buy now and use the code: SUNNY to save 30% OFF your next Kate Spade On Purpose Collection purchase.

The On Purpose collection is not about giving to charity, but about working to grow the global marketplace now so that its products can benefit the future. Kate Spade has partnered with Abahizi Dushyisikirane (ADC) a local organization in Masoro that is owned by its full time employees, which consists of 90% women aged 18-60. What I love most is that the organization is centrally focused around workplace happiness and not necessarily work-life-balance. Employees work 8 hour days, 5 days a week, for 12 months a year. ADC employees get paid competitive salaries with benefits including 3 weeks of paid vacation, healthcare, paid maternity leave and more.
