Savvy Startups: Weekend Casual, Smart & Stylish Menswear that Gives Back
There are two things I love more than puppies, and those two things would be men AND fashion (okay, maybe a third- pizza)… Now combine the two and you have menswear fashion, one of my favorite topics relating to style. Shoes are great and haute couture dresses are pretty, but if it were up to me, menswear accessories, women’s accessories and handbags are at the top of my fashion favorites list. So why menswear? Growing up I was always dressing in pinstripes, Chuck Taylors and suspenders because the look was simple and easy. I was inspired by bad boys like James Dean, Elvis Presley, and impressed by all the clean cut ESPN news commentators with their perfectly pressed ties and matching pocket squares. Classic accessories like ties, bow ties, cuff links and suspenders just added a touch of elegance to any look on anyone whether your look was street chic or super preppy. My latest obsession is with Weekend Casual, an LA-based brand with a whole lot of color, design and giving back that makes the collection a must-have for every man’s wardrobe.
The Weekend Casual concept was officially born during Monday Night Football. Co-founder Kunal Parikh and his friends had tossed around the idea of forming their own business, but it wasn’t until they saw a major athlete on a post-game interview endorse a poorly made gym bag that really fueled them to take action. “We checked out the website for the bag and found that the site was super hard to navigate, the item wasn’t designed well (materials and product were made poorly), there wasn’t anything unique in the product’s key selling points, AND the web experience was not easy. None of us would go through a list of 30 pages just to find a plain tie,” said Parikh. And with that, Kunal, his co-founders Amit and Vimal decided they would build a company that would focus on one goal: to create a line focused on price point and quality, while providing pieces in their collection that would speak to everyone.
As a huge fan of Weekend Casual, I love that there is a “giving” factor in this business model, which for the brand is their dedication to the Essential Cause, which provides a 1 for 1 impact toward Surge for Water or Ekal Vidyalaya (donating $1 per item to your cause of choice) and offering an easy to shop online site that is clean, user friendly and focuses primarily on styling the unique designs and color combinations the WC brand. Weekend Casual products include ties, bow ties, tie clips, cuff links, suspenders, pocket squares, socks, and more. Prices range from $10-$20 USD. I love the gorgeous photography on the WC site and I was so amazed with the unique designs that I had to include some items in the HGC 2014 Holiday Photo Shoot, and feature the Camo Tie in the my HGC curated Conscious Magazine’s Biggest Gift Guide (Holiday 2014).
I met Kunal and the guys from Weekend Casual at the Abbott Kinney Festival last fall, and have been super excited to include Kunal in the HGC Holiday 2014 Photo Shoot where he graciously volunteered his pretty smile for us and we also collaborated for the HGC Gives Back Holiday Pop-up Shop in December. To shop, check out the Weekend Casual site here, or to shop the Looks (my favorites are Happy Hour, Pit Stop and The Connoisseur) click here.

Want to take part in the Weekend Casual “give back” movement? Shopping isn’t the only way to give back. Another reason why I love this brand so much is because the guys embody so much of what House of G&C stands for, which is to look good, do good AND give back. As I mentioned earlier this year, in 2015 I want to focus more on the “giving back” part of the HGC lifestyle so I’ll be covering more events and opportunities for you to join! Speaking of which- it’s Valentine’s Day weekend AND President’s Day weekend- so bring your loved one, girlfriends, boyfriends- all loved ones to DTLA this Sunday to meet the awesome team behind Weekend Casual and support their “Style Drive”!
